Work / Life Balance - is it achieveable?

As people's lives become busier and new technologies mean that we are always available and contactable, finding a balance between work and home can be difficult.

Achieving a work/life balance can be especially difficult when you run your own business, (and even more so if you are a one man band). The buck stops with you and it can be hard to designate times to 'turn off'.

But, actually, many people decide to go into business to improve their work/life balance and to have more control over their time. Research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), indicates that 69.4% of small business owners started up so that they could have greater independence and freedom in their working life.

But this is not the whole picture. The FSB research also shows that many small business owners work very long hours - 22% of respondents said they worked more than 60 hours a week.

And, 'thanks' to technology, it is easier than ever to stay connected to your business - making it harder to switch off in the evening and at weekends.

Some have found that they can achieve a balance by integrating work and home rather than ruthlessly setting boundaries. The beauty of running your own business is that you make the rules so you can break out of the normal set routine and make your work fit into your lifestyle: make your business work for you!

Many advisary slogans have been thrown at this - such as "work to live, don't live for work" - which can be easy platitudes in theory but difficult to achieve in reality.

Whatever your work/life situation, the key to modern business is always flexibility. Your balance will hopefully evolve towards lifestyle as time goes on - and that is when you need sound, trusted financial advice to fund your chosen lifestyle and ensure that the scales do not tip back again!
